Throughout your life you have had someone that has been there for you, guided and supported you, whether that was your manager, a colleague, a parent, a friend, a coach, a college professor.  Then, you reach a point in your life where you have the chance to do the same for someone else. It can be both exciting, and a little confusing.

What is a mentor?

A mentor is a trusted, seasoned advisor who supports and guides someone through their personal and/or professional journey. They do so by getting to know their mentee, providing resources tailored to their specific needs, and brainstorming solutions to challenges.

Mentors become trusted advisers and role models – people who have "been there" and "done that." They support and encourage their mentees by offering suggestions and knowledge, both general and specific. The goal is to help mentees improve their skills and, hopefully, advance their careers.

What does it mean to be a mentor?

At its core, being a mentor is being a trusted advisor. It all boils down to making yourself available to support and advise someone when they need it, delivering that support in a way that makes sense to them, and always keeping that person's best interests in mind.

A mentoring partnership can be rewarding to both people, personally and professionally. It's an opportunity to develop communication skills, expand your viewpoints, and consider new ways of approaching situations. And both partners can advance their careers in the process.

10 Ways to Be an Amazing Mentor

When you break out the mentor’s responsibilities, they include:

  • Understand what you want out of the relationship

  • Set expectations together in the very beginning

  • Take a genuine interest in your mentee as a person

  • Build trust

  • Know when to give advice

  • Don’t assume anything about your mentee – ask

  • Share your journey

  • Celebrate their achievements

  • Seek out resources to help your mentee grow

  • Be sure you have the bandwidth

Mentees don’t learn by listening to your experience. They learn by putting ideas into practice, and having you dig into your experience to help them refine their approach, correct course when they’re wrong, and expand their idea of what’s possible.

From a high level, a mentoring relationship is about helping someone develop toward certain goals or objectives. The mentor primarily serves as a sounding board for the mentee, offering guidance and direction, but not dictating the goal. This is why mentoring is typically unique from other types of learning engagements.

As we continue to look for opportunities to enhance/grow revenue at our inns, I wanted to share with you all an update on the exciting changes we have made or are in the process of making in the next few weeks!

SafeMark Revenue

Thank you to our fabulous training department along with our SafeMark representative Denise Walden for revamping our SafeMark training webinars and facilitating the training to all of you.  I hope this was beneficial in helping you to get a better understanding of how to properly “sell” this benefit to our guests.  Last year, we had a take rate of 46%, this year the goal is to improve upon this number. Speaking of "Take Rate"... Interested in taking a prize home?  Email: stephanie.doherty@rriwest.com "Take Rate" by Monday March 18th for your chance to win a special prize! In addition, we are testing a safe fee increase from $2.00 to $3.00 to see if we can capture additional revenue with limited negative feedback.  Stay tuned for updated results and additional training for those inns that are not achieving a 30% or higher take rate.

Early Check-in and Late Check-out Fees

We now have monthly tracking that shows exactly how much every inn is accumulating for both revenue streams.  This is an easy way to enhance your top-line revenue!  Last year, our total revenue amount for Early check-in fees was $163,340 and Late check-out fees was $174,752.  This year, we need to blow those numbers up!  You may have noticed that we have verbiage included on all sites regarding the Late check-out fees.  We are also working with the brand to update the special terms and policies section to include the Early-check-in fees policy, just waiting on final brand standard updates.  Make sure your GSR’s are communicating these options to our guests and applying the charges accordingly.

Fresh Air Reporting

For those inns that participate with the Fresh Air Sensor Program you should have noticed that we have created a new tracking spreadsheet for your sensor replacements, offline and overdue sensors, and smoking alerts/revenue.  The goal is to ensure all devices are operational, so we have 100% opportunity to capture every smoking alert that comes through. In addition, the training team is offering an upcoming Fresh Air Reset training webinar.  Refer to the e-mail from Jennifer Ramirez for dates and times.  We will be looking into adding additional properties in the future as well.

Your RVPO and I will be monitoring our progress with these revenue generating opportunities and ask that you stay engaged and look to improve your results as well!

Stay tuned for more revenue strategist updates in upcoming communications!

The best way to provide our guests with the most up to date information about our hotels and what’s in the area is through Redroof.com and our Experience Page.   We want that information to be accurate.  Your help is needed.  We are asking you to review your hotel on Redroof.com and your Experience Page.  Send any changes or confirmation that you have reviewed, and no changes are needed, to your RDSM by March 29th.

What to look for:

  • Is the information correct?

    • Check-in / Check-out times

    • Amenities

    • Terms and Conditions- check-in age, credit card requirements, pet policy, safe fee correct, early check-in fee / late check-out fees

  • Pictures correct, all the links work

  • Restaurants – any that need to be removed/ any that need to be added

  • What about airport locations, is the correct airport listed for your location

  • Colleges & Universities, are there any close by that are not listed

  • Events, are they current.

  • Any outdated information

  • Your key sponsor, are they mentioned?

Your Sales Team reviews Redroof.com and Experience Pages in June and December.  It’s great for you at the property to review as you know when restaurants, attractions, or events change.  The Sales Team is asking that you review these sites in March and September.
